“Custom” and “WordPress” describe different starting points
WordPress is a content-management system with a large ecosystem of themes, plugins, and hosting choices. A custom website is designed and implemented around a particular brief, which may use a static-site framework, a headless CMS, or a full application stack. A careful WordPress build can be fast and secure; a poorly managed custom build can be difficult to edit. The label alone does not decide performance or quality.

Compare the operating model, not a speed promise
Ask how pages are authored, how updates are tested, who owns hosting and accounts, how backups are restored, and how security issues are handled. For WordPress, review the plugin list, update policy, user roles, caching, image handling, and access controls. For custom work, review the framework, dependencies, content workflow, deployment process, accessibility, analytics, and documentation.
SEO is not guaranteed by either platform. Search performance depends on useful content, crawlability, information architecture, relevance, links, accessibility, and real-world user experience. Performance should be measured on the proposed build with representative pages and devices, not promised through a universal benchmark. A simple brochure site may not justify custom engineering; a complex workflow may make a collection of plugins harder to govern.

Choose WordPress when the business needs a familiar editor, a conventional publishing site, and a team or partner able to maintain the installation responsibly. Choose custom when requirements are genuinely unusual, performance and interaction need deliberate engineering, or the long-term operating model justifies the added build work. Keep domain, hosting, analytics, and source-code access under business control. Compare the cost of future changes and migration, not only the initial quote.
